The Fighting Fed

Not everyone was satisfied with the size of the interest rate cut, but the strong tone of the Fed's statement and additional efforts by the Fed on the international front has markets rising around the world:

Recent policy actions, including today’s rate reduction, coordinated interest rate cuts by central banks, extraordinary liquidity measures, and official steps to strengthen financial systems, should help over time to improve credit conditions and promote a return to moderate economic growth. Nevertheless, downside risks to growth remain. The Committee will monitor economic and financial developments carefully and will act as needed to promote sustainable economic growth and price stability.

Second Best Day Ever

It's amazing to see the stodgy old Dow up over 10% in a single day. Let's hope the interest rate cut by the Feds is bigger than expected and helps lead the way to a real stock market rally and economic recovery.

I may have some great news of my own soon, but in the meantime, "if it's Tuesday, this must be Belgium":

My best friend' father got laid-off some months ago which was a catastrophe to a family relying on one breadwinner. My friend applied for the finance aid, however rejected. His father was in deep sorrow for some time. Anyhow life will never wait for him and what is more important is that HE IS A MAN. So he struggled to get hired as what you are now doing and he made it! Some similarities exist between your and his situations and you are now possessing a lot more advantages-- knowledge and young.... Nobody care. It is very hard, cold and lonely to live in Finland...people like me.

 

Here is just now for sale a suitable real estate. I would like to buy it and set up there this home for us and for old poor artists, as soon as possible, but no funds. I need support/ financing loan 1 million euro. Can you help me to get this funds by you? I like to use Saturdays to contemplate what has been accomplished during the week and appreciate all that I have (or these days, all that I don't have). Enough said. Of the making of blogs, there is no end. The sun shines whether or not we see it or feel it. Although "there is nothing new under the sun," for better or worse, we live in interesting times.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced an initial agreement with Iceland on a $2.1 billion two-year loan to support an economic recovery program to help the island restore confidence in its banking system and stabilize its currency.

The IMF is currently discussing possible loan packages for Hungary, Iceland, Pakistan and the Ukraine.

The IMF has more than $200 billion of loanable funds and can draw on additional resources through two standing borrowing arrangements with groups of IMF member countries.

On the home front:

MBIA Inc, the largest U.S. bond insurer, and its No. 2 rival, Ambac Financial Group Inc, met with regulators earlier this week to push for a way to tap into the federal government's bailout plan.

Shock and Awe in Washington

When Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan told the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, “Those of us who have looked to the self-interest of lending institutions to protect shareholders’ equity, myself included, are in a state of shocked disbelief,” he was speaking for most of us - at least the part about being in a state of shock. “This crisis,” he told lawmakers, “has turned out to be much broader than anything I could have imagined. It has morphed from one gripped by liquidity restraints to one in which fears of insolvency are now paramount.” Few people saw the crisis coming and few listened.

I am not looking forward to the Winter, but I am looking forward to the Spring.

The Dawning of the Age of Transparency

"We are really going to have to rebuild this system from the ground up,'' Paul Volcker said today in New York. Volcker served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1979 to 1987, under Presidents Carter and Reagan. He said that instead of spreading the risk and creating transparency, the creation of complex financial products had concentrated risk and created opaqueness. Is this the dawning of the Age of Transparency?

Money Market Investor Funding Facility (MMIFF)

The Federal Reserve has announced the creation of the Money Market Investor Funding Facility (MMIFF) which will support a private-sector initiative designed to provide liquidity to U.S. money market investors.

The short-term debt markets have been under considerable strain in recent weeks as money market mutual funds and other investors have had difficulty selling assets to satisfy redemption requests and meet portfolio rebalancing needs.  By facilitating the sales of money market instruments in the secondary market, the MMIFF should improve the liquidity position of money market investors, thus increasing their ability to meet any further redemption requests and their willingness to invest in money market instruments.  Improved money market conditions will enhance the ability of banks and other financial intermediaries to accommodate the credit needs of businesses and households.

The Treasury Department has been busy too:

The U.S. Treasury Department today announced that PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and Ernst & Young will assist the Department in the implementation of the Troubled Asset Relief Program authorized under the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act.

The firms will help the Department with accounting and internal controls services needed to administer the complex portfolio of troubled assets the Department will purchase, including whole loans and mortgage backed securities. PricewaterhouseCoopers will help the Department establish a sound internal control posture and Ernst & Young will provide general accounting support and expert accounting advice.

The initial orders are worth $191,469.27 and $492,006.95, respectively.

The U.S. government and governments around the world are making a heroic effort to fix the financial system - and the credit markets continue to show signs of life again.

I completed a draft for an article concerning corporate governance and executive pay for an Indian business journal called, "The Human Factor." I titled the article, "Corporate Governance in the Age of Transparency." Here is a preview:

New regulations were formed and passed, the pressure mounted, and Boards of Directors started to get more involved in their companies – mostly to protect their own backs. However, they were still willing to pay the CEO a ridiculous sum to sit in the saddle. The current crisis has brought that to an end. The age of outsized fees for Directors and CEOs seems to be over. Everyone will now be publicly observed and scrutinized. The Age of Transparency is upon us.

Global Economic Stimulus

The good news is that that world is working together to prevent an economic disaster. During the past week, The Netherlands injected $13.4 billion into ING, Germany approved a $675 billion bank bailout plan, South Korea announced a $130 billion loan program, and the IMF set a $6 billion rescue package for Iceland.

The credit markets are starting to function again, and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is talking about further economic stimulus.

 

Maybe the world isn't coming to an end just yet.

 

My flight from Omaha to Newark was smooth, and I wrote most of an article about Corporate Governance and Executive Compensation for "The Human Factor," an Indian HR magazine. I hope to finish and forward the article tomorrow.

Sunny Omaha, New York Sun

The weather in Omaha was fantastic this weekend - which helped keep my mind off the economy, the politics and my situation. I missed Sarah Palin's appearance on Saturday Night Live, and hear that I didn't miss much. A couple of neighbors got excited by Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama, and there is a sense here that Obama could possibly split the Cornhusker State. Several local people with whom I have spoken feel that Omaha is mostly insulated from what has been happening on Wall St., but twice as many houses are for sale compared to last year.

It was a relatively quiet day, but I received the following interesting email:

I'm back in Omaha, and the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffet, has spoken through the N.Y. Times:

Over the long term, the stock market news will be good. In the 20th century, the United States endured two world wars and other traumatic and expensive military conflicts; the Depression; a dozen or so recessions and financial panics; oil shocks; a flu epidemic; and the resignation of a disgraced president. Yet the Dow rose from 66 to 11,497.

I don’t like to opine on the stock market, and again I emphasize that I have no idea what the market will do in the short term. Nevertheless, I’ll follow the lead of a restaurant that opened in an empty bank building and then advertised: “Put your mouth where your money was.” Today my money and my mouth both say equities.

As soon as I get back on my feet, I'll start buying stocks, perhaps Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway.

I made progress on the job front again today, writing a sample valuation for a financial services firm in NYC and playing phone tag with a CEO from a car parts re-manufacturing company based in the U.K.

Meanwhile, my fame continues to spread in Hong Kong. I received the following emails from a fellow MIT alumni based in HK:

Josh, saw your news front page on HK newspaper. As shown in this postcard, I believe that we are going though some tough snowstorm like times... remember those days at MIT when we had snowstorms, we used to go out and ski and throw snows when classes were on halt. We should take it lightly and try to weather through this storm with a small sense of humour just like what you did. Listen, I work for a Canadian Bank called Royal Bank of Canada and we are rather immune so if you would like to shoot me your resume, I maybe able to help. FYI, we are hiring especially in the far east!

Riding the Roller Coaster

It's not easy to enjoy a ride when your terrified, but when it's over, it makes for a great memory. I certainly look forward to this year's events as a memory.

The debate between Senators Obama and McCain focused on the financial crisis, and even though Obama seemed more tired than usual, he seemed to win the scuffle. McCain came across as cranky and condescending.

I spent the morning being interviewed about the economy, Wall St. and my personal story by a journalist from Japan's Fuji TV (a continuation of yesterday's interview and filming). It was my second TV interview for a major Japanese network news program.

I made progress on several job-related fronts, including a call from the HR Manager of a re-manufacturer of car parts, based in the UK. The CEO is looking for a colleague to help with international business expansion.

My rejection of the day came from a financial institution in Omaha.

Preserving the Free Market

"The government's role will be limited and temporary," President Bush pledged. "These measures are not intended to take over the free market but to preserve it." Sounds good to me. At least the market did not tank today, and a pull-back after yesterday's record run is definitely healthy. $250 billion sounds like a lot of preservatives, but these days, it's a drop in the bucket.

Today, I met with a journalist from Hong Kong for an hour in Bryant Park, spent two hours with a film crew from Japan's Fuji TV, and then went to a second interview at a mid-town financial services company. The interview went well, and I am hoping that I am close to the end of my job search.

Best Day Ever

It looks as though the week-end efforts of the Department of the Treasury, Office of Financial Stability, G7 and G20 paid off. The stock market's worst week was followed by its best day ever.

We'll see what tomorrow brings when the credit markets re-open. If the credit flows, there will be a big sigh of relief, perhaps as big as today's.

My interview with a journalist from Hong Kong was postponed until tomorrow, so she could attend a press conference at Princeton University for Nobel Prize winner, Paul Krugman. She probably got her priorities right. "I'm slightly less terrified today than I was on Friday," said Professor Krugman at the conference. "We are now witnessing a crisis that is as severe as the crisis that hit Asia in the 90s. This crisis bears some resemblance to the Great Depression."

Tomorrow, I also plan to meet with a journalist from Japan's Fuji TV, and I have a second interview at a mid-town accounting firm for a valuations position.
